In honor of April 16

The summer of 2010, I was a Hokie Camp Counselor. The final night, there was a camp fire in where various counselors stood up and told stories about the moment they knew they were Hokies. Some spoke of resiliency of the Tech spirit, some about the friends they made, and some about the food (I miss Owens Ham and Gouda salad especially today). Afterwards, one of my campers asked when he would know. Other campers (who were all incoming freshman) had talked about being totally sure of their choice, and he wasn’t sure yet. There were a million things I thought about telling him, but I told him to wait until his first football game. The moment he started jumping with 66,000 people to Enter Sandman, he’d know.

A few weeks pass, the first game came and went, and afterwards, sure enough, he messaged me saying “I JUMPED AND NOW I KNOW!! I’m definitely a Hokie.”

At the risk of being incredibly earnest and cheesy, I'll defend and love this place til the day I die. Never have I heard of a student body so crazy about the town, the sports, the food, the people, and the school itself. What I would give to be there right now, working at the InnovationSpace, running on the Huckleberry then laying on the Drillfield and wandering down Main Street. I'm so thankful that my brother wasn't hurt that day back in 2007, and so thankful that I had the chance to go there. Those five years of my life were so well spent I can never express my feelings in a little blog entry. The Spring Game next week can't come fast enough.

If you've never had the pleasure of experiencing a Tech football game, here is a little taste:

Everytime the announcer says "these people are losing their minds" I get chills. One of the most fun games I've been to.
