#2
As mentioned in the last (first?) post, I'm about to be hanging around for a fifth at Tech. I never intended this to happen, after all, I'm on top of things, organized (my room at the moment tells a different story but that's for another entry) and motivated! Well, I'm in a 4 year program and I started it a year late. So, boom, I'm here for another year. Really can't complain, as college is pretty sweet. The people are cool, the beer is cheap, the football spirit is rampant. I'll be a part time student with 3 jobs next semester, so there will never be a dull moment.
Since this blog is supposed to be about my adventures through life, I guess I'll give a little taste of what exactly those are at the momento:
-I'm interning at a graphic design studio in DC for the second year in a row. This company is fantastic. They deal pretty much only with non-profits, have a funky, hand drawn style that I love and have adapted to use in my own work at school, just bought a brand new office, and are pretty much the nicest, most genuinely good people I've ever met. That's a bold statement, but how many good people do we actually know? I mean like good good. Like they've never thought a mean thought in their life and only deal with non-profit organizations! Do-gooders is an understatement. And I love it.
-I'm starting job #2 in July. I'll be teaching at a media camp at George Washington. The curriculum is still unknown to me, (I expect photoshop? photography? teaching kids how to do Andy Samberg's Nick Cage impressions?) but the kids will be ages 8-12 and I'll be making bank. Can't complain at all. Working at a summer camp for a few years back in high school were the most fun I've ever had, going back to work at a camp in any form is a dream come true.
-Last November, I finished my first half marathon in Richmond, and last week on impulse I signed up for the actual marathon. 26.2 miles to go. Today I ran about 9 miles; so nowhere close to where I need to be...but...it's MAY. In six months time I expect I'll be able to run30 20 and be alright afterwards. As long as I got my trusty little iPod shuffle full of sick beats like One Direction and Britney to keep me going, I can do anything! You may or may not think I'm kidding. Think whatever you'd like.
Having concrete goals to look forward to is pretty important to me, I like having something to work towards. This is a big reason why I was so in love with yearbook in high school and graphic design now: I was and am dealing with projects that have an endpoint in sight. At the end of a school year, I was able to hold the yearbook, see my hard work pay off. Especially senior year, that little guy was my baby. In school now, we're given projects, we work work work at them, and at the end we have a tangible, finished product. Then we start all over.
The marathon is a goal with a definite payoff. Having that date circled and starred in my planner is already motivating me to do a few things: schedule runs ahead of time, get mentally prepared for them, not drink so much (or at all) the night before, and most importantly, actually run! You can say you'll start running, but without a race to work towards, will you actually do it? I know I didn't (much) once cross country ended and college began.
-Inspired by my favorite furniture blog, I've taken a few pieces of furniture from my house that we were going to dump anyway and have taken them in. Four old dining room chairs and a foyer table are all now MINE and are going to be my little summer projects. The foyer table is set to go in my living room down in Blacksburg, hopefully going along with our color scheme that Shannon and I have so thoughtfully planned out. The chairs will end up on our porch and will be painted and refinished with love <3. And probably funky patterns and maybe a Buddha elephant or two.
-Finally, I finished my application for the Peace Corps. I'm not entirely sure that a) I'll get in or b) I want to do it right away after school, but having it as an option is nice. With the real world being just one year out, its crunch time for figuring out my life. Other options include: backpacking the Appalachian Trail, backpacking through South America, volunteering/working for the World Cup in 2014, taking a NOLS sea kayaking course, figuring out how to write for SNL, or I guess finding a real job. In due time, in dueee time.
Happy Memorial Day everybody. I spent the weekend on my friend's boat in the Potomac, waterskiing and trying my best to get semi-tan. Tomorrow I'm kayaking on the Potomac and helping my dad shop for his newfound running addiction. Summer is sweet and with 3 months still to go, I think it will only get sweeter.
Peace and Blessings.
