# 7 - Gotta commit

For whatever reason, my two hours per day on the Metro always turns into a time of reflection and a time when I think I get these "eureka!" moments...that I pretty much forget about the second I get in the car to drive home, but sometimes they stick. The one that I had this week is pretty basic, but I figured out a good word to make it easy to remember: commit.

It first came about when I was cutting strips of tape to paint a door at my office. My company got a new office this summer and we're in the process of turning it into a real studio. So for about an hour a day, I get to paint and stuff like that. Pretty nice to get away from a computer for a little bit, let me tell you. Anyway, one of the doors has 15 windows inside of it (3 across, 5 down...its a French door). To make the process of putting up painter's tape easier, I figured I'd cut 30 identical strips longways and then 30 short strips. Well dudes, this is a long process. And it takes longer than you'd expect. And its semi-annoying. About 12 strips in, I thought "god if I don't have enough patience to cut 60 strips of tape then how ON EARTH am I supposed to run 26.2 MILES?!?". And so then I just did it, straight through. That's all you can do.

The next day, I was waiting for the yellow train (RUSH PLUS IS AWESOME) at Chinatown, and this pack of kids was frantically trying to find a less crowded green train to get to the Nats game. I don't know how many there were, maybe 15, but they got separated and were going every which way. One kid sprinted by and goes "GUYS WE JUST GOTTA COMMIT! GOTTA COMMIT!" They ran to that kid, they got on the same train, and off they went. They committed.

So there it is, my thought for the day. If you say you're gonna do something, just freaking commit to it. No half-assing. Whether its a marathon or 5k or taking a class or cleaning your room or designing a website...it will suck sometimes, and probably it will suck a lot, but you just gotta do it. And don't complain...no one really cares and there's no point. Can't say I've been especially good at "committing" in the past, at least about certain things, but its something to work on for the future.

Kept it in mind yesterday when I set out for a 13.1 mile run. If I wimped out during that then there would be no way I'd finish 26.2. I said I'd do it, paid money for it, and now its time to deliver.

PS It was really hard and I am in so much pain. More than a day later.

PPS saw the chubbiest baby today....seriously was about to grab it and run.

PPPS this weirdo at church told my sister and I that we have "incredible auras" and that my raspy voice will take me far in life. "People smoke 8 packs a day to get a voice like yours" ...da ferk? creepy much?
